Reports Document FOIA Worldwide
Two reports highlight various Freedom of Information Acts (FOIA) in different countries worldwide. Reports by David Banisar, visiting research fellow at the School of Law at University of Leeds and Director of the FOI Project of Privacy International, and Dutch journalist Roger Vleugels indicate which countries currently have access to information laws and provide a brief introduction to the development of such national legislation.
In recent years, utilizing domestic FOIA has provided citizens with new maneuverability for accessing information from the international financial institutions (IFIs) and increasing transparency around their operations. The reports listed below can be useful tools to understanding if and when using a FOIA is appropriate.
“Freedom of Information and Access to Government Records around the World”
- This March 2004 report by David Banisar provides a record of different FIO statutes for over fifty countries worldwide, including a brief history of FOI measures in the specific country and an introduction to some basic provisions of these acts.

“Overview of FOIA Countries Worldwide- February 1 2006”
- Dutch journalist Roger Vleugels’s report rates 68 countries, territories, and international bodies according to the status of FOIA in each respective entity. The report provides the name of each respective FOIA and the years in which the act was passed and took effect, where applicable.
While the Global Transparency Initiative (GTI) is highlighting the availability these of these documents, the GTI can not endorse nor guarantee the factual accuracy of either report.
